Hi! Today I'm going to talk about a field trip going to the capital in Des Moines and Des Moines Art Center. I'm going to talk about the capital first and let me tell you that we (by we I mean my class) went to the legislative branch. So when my class went into the capital it looked pretty cool and we had a tour guide too! I learned lots of stuff about the capital, like when the capital went on fire, and the history of the capital and how the gold was legit leaf gold. Our tour guide told us that if she were to grab all the gold and crunch it all up into a ball it would be the size of a golf ball so yeah gold leaf is VERY thin. and we also went into the library in the capital and it smelled AWESOME and there were a ton of books in the library but they were all about the history of laws or something like that and we just looked in the library and stuff and then went to a spot in the capital and when we looked up there was a picture of the sky and and the Iowa flag on the top of the capital. It was pretty cool. Then we learned about this HUGE ship, and it was the biggest one in the US and it was in California and in the end of the tour guide we learned about these dolls that represented all the first lady's of the governor and that was pretty much the whole trip there and well my favorite part of this all was to be able to look up at the sky and Iowa flag :)
And now it's time to talk about the art center! Before we went in the building we went to the sculpture park where there were a ton of sculptures and I won't name most of them but i'll try to name most of them. So first off let's talk about this letter man. It was very cool and we got to get inside of the body there was entrance kind of thing and it was a basically a person sitting down with their arms wrapped on him except his body was all letters!!! Then we got to see this ghost made by a Japanese guy and it was one of my favorite sculptures there and then there was this sculpture with chairs that we sat on and yeah not much to say about that then there was my number one sculpture. It was a sculpture with mirrors that had one color in each mirror and it went on to be a color wheel. Then we found this horse kind of thing that looked like it was made with wood but really it started out to be wood then it was covered with these kind of things so yeah... Anyway I think those are all the sculptures i'm going to talk about so let's get right into getting inside the art center so remember the blog I posted about Anselm Kiefer and how one of his pieces were in the art center well I got to see it! And believe me it was HUGE!!! But we got to talk about it and well Kiefer saw that the destruction in ww2 and decided to paint about it, and moving on we found a Pablo Picasso and I found out some pretty interesting stuff about his paintings we also got to see some other stuff and yeah I can't name all the pieces so I'll leave some pictures and yeah that was my field trip!
